It’s desktop interface isn’t super pretty and I’ve had some issues with it not being able to get the metadata for certain articles, but overall it works well. It also has iCloud sync to keep your iPad and desktop libraries up to date (although I’ve only used their Wifi sync as I’m on the demo version).
It has hands down the best Apple Pencil support I’ve seen from a reference manager app and does an incredible job of organizing your highlights and annotations for later reviewing. I have been trying the free demo version of Bookends, and it’s pretty good so far. I have used Mendeley for years and recently got an iPad for reading and annotating scientific articles, but like you said the Mendeley app is terrible.
